Chiapas Vinyl Explosion Pt. 2

The Explosion continues, this time with Los Socios Del Ritmo. If anyone has any information on this group, please fill me in. I have a couple of their records from the mid 70s and they're amazing. (I understand the group is still around?) Wah-wah guitar, weird synth leads and tan lines abound! Fans of the Meters' "Stormy" will enjoy the mellow "Mentiras," while "Vamos A Can Cun" is more uptempo with a 4 over 3 beat, Santana-ish organ swells and tough guitars.

Chiapas Vinyl Explosion Pt. 1

A couple of years ago, I traveled to Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico with a band called Mocassin High Five (which consisted of me, my cousin, his girlfriend and her sister). The mission of the trip was to record lots of music ("field recordings" of ourselves) and have adventures to bond us as an ensemble. While we did record some good material, for me the prize of the trip was a forgotten cache of vinyl I came across in the back of a record store in San Cristobal. Beneath a stack of dusty cardboard boxes there lay a long crate of mostly unopened cumbia, conjunto, salsa and local rock records from the 70s and early 80s. The owner was more than happy to give me everything they had in order to make some room in the shop, it seemed, for more of these weird aircraft carrier posters or ceramic tiger heads they were selling. But I only had a small bag with me, so I took what I could carry under my arm back to Guate. The next few posts will consist of the cream of this highly enjoyable crop.

Here we have a version of "Video Killed The Radio Star" by (what I've concluded to be) a local cover band from around the San Cristobal area called El Tim Del Rock.

Okay

I found this at the Atlantic Mills Flea Market for twenty cents here in Olneyville, but my boombox snapped the tape upon first listen of the B-side, "Very Special" (featuring Spinderella, Laree Williams and Karen Anderson). I repaired the thing with some scotch tape, flipped it to the A (the homiside) and started this blog. There will be no shammin in future posts.

Also, I don't know how to post audio yet...
